Cafe Vue at Heide Museum of Modern Art

I was excited about visiting the Heide not only because I was keen to see the art but there was the prospect of a decent lunch.  To be able to visit a Shannon Bennett establishment in between exhibitions was certainly a drawcard for me.  The day we visited, the sun was shining but the wind was cold and crisp, so we were looking for a hearty meal to warm us up.

I recently invested in some pie tins and had a go at making mince and cheese pies, so I had pies on the brain.  I decided to go with the chicken & porcini pie whilst TBS who is a burger fiend, ordered the Blackmore Wagyu beef burger with crispy bacon and house fries.  A glass of the 2012 Fighting Gully Road rosé for me and a White Rabbit dark ale for TBS were ordered to wash it all down.

My pie arrived on a pillow of silky, creamy mash, a puddle of mushy peas and was accompanied by a rocket and onion salad.  The mash was out of this world and was complemented by the gravy.   However, the pie itself was luke warm.  Not ideal.  I didn't discover any filling until I was half way through so it definitely could have done with a few more bits of chicken.  The flavour of the chicken and the porcini gravy was spot on though and very enjoyable.

TBS loved the smoky Wagyu but felt the burger could have been a bit more substantial all round- a bit more cos lettuce, a slightly larger patty- just bigger.  The house fries were a tiny bit soggy and the two that I nicked could have been hotter.

I didn't feel ripped off- I thought my $14 pie was fair but I would be happier paying a couple of dollars more if they just upped the ante a tiny bit...  In saying that, I'd eat here again.

When I visit in the summer I plan on grabbing a coffee from the cafe and bringing my own gourmet picnic to enjoy in the Heide gardens.

Good to know:
