Reuben Hills: Sydney

We managed a visit to Reuben Hills for breakfast on a fleeting overnighter to Sydney recently.  I was excited about this café after reading so much about it and had managed to convince TBS to give up Bill's hotcakes just this once.

Arriving early on a Saturday has its perks as we waltzed on in to a table with no problems. Two piccolos were ordered as we set about contemplating the menu.  The all day menu contains a variety of scrumptious sounding treats.  There are soft baked eggs, tacos, sandwiches, fried chicken and then the milder more sensible breakfast options like porridge and muesli.  In my heart of hearts I was veering towards the short rib burger. But it was half 7, perhaps just a fraction too early for me to indulge, so I went for the soft baked eggs with goats curd, spinach, ranchero and rye.  TBS opted for the Franks n Beans served with a soft duck egg, tortilla crisps, chimmichuri. pork sausage and sour cream.

The coffee was strong and smooth.  A real winner.

My baked eggs were really satisfying.  Well toasted rye mopped up the tomato sauce which had a healthy spicy kick and the cloud of goats curd was rich and had a strong distinct flavour.  I enjoyed this breakfast, it was light and exactly what I felt like.

TBS's Franks n Beans was hearty.  The tortilla crisps were of a denser nature and were a good base for the spicy beans and the yolky goodness of the fried duck egg.  The only element of the breakfast that was lacking in flavour was the chimmichuri which TBS felt didn't really add much to the dish.

A second coffee later and we were ready to start our day.  I'm looking forward to visiting Reuben Hills again to sample more of their menu. I imagine the café houses a buzzier crowd later in the day so perhaps lunch next time where I won't feel like a heathen for ordering a burger.

Good to know:

Coffee $3.50
Franks n Beans with soft duck egg, tortilla crisps, chimmichuri. pork sausage and sour cream $19
Soft baked eggs with goats curd, spinach, ranchero and rye $16
